I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that at times I wonder where technology is leading us. There are so many wonderful windows opened by new technologies on almost a daily basis now. There is so much that we can learn, develop, and improve to make our lives easier and provide new levels of understanding. I am still amazed at the breadth of answers that I get every time I type a question in Google. It's amazing to think that answers to most of lifes questions can be found in a matter of seconds online. We rely so much on the web, cell phones, and other forms of technology. I hope that as we expand their use we are able to keep them in their proper context. I think we all fear that some day inter-personal communication will play second fiddle to keyboards and touchpads. One thing is certain, education and the students of the future stand to reap a tremendous windfall of opportunity from computer offerings.
I read a book recently that was written by Clayton Christensen and is titled "Disrupting Class". It describes the potential for technology and the role it will inevitably play in education in the future. Education software and websites will provide students with a breadth and depth of curriculum that could never have been conceived of even just 10 years ago. Students in rural communities will have the opportunity to learn the foreign language of their choice, or even choose from electives that are not even found in our largest and most well established schools. The world will be their campus. What an exciting thought! Every student having the opportunity to learn in the way that he or she learns best, studying topics that most interest them. How will it be possible? Technology tools will make it a reality...as long as we keep a proper persepctive we have so much to look forward to!
