I came across an article today in eSchool News about virtual schools. The article said that educational technology is either sustaining or disruptive. They give an example of a SMART board as a sustaining technology and a virtual school a disruptive technology. They also site a book by Clayton Christensen which I have read titled, Disrupting Class. In his book he discusses how customized learning can help more students succeed in school and that student-centered classrooms will increase the demand for new technology. As a result computers will need to be available to every child. His theory says that if we compete in the global classroom we will get ahead in the global market. I have heard from teachers who believe that using our computer software is beneficial in there schools to help struggling students catch up with their classmates. It is also helpful when an ESOL student or any student, is transferred mid semester. The software allows them to work at their own pace, be productive and see progress, rather than feeling overwhelmed and behind.
Virtual schools are an interesting concept. At least 27 states have statewide online-learning initiatives. The Florida Virtual School, boasts nearly 125,000 students and saw a 25-percent increase in attendance last year.
With all this in mind, I would like to hear your opinion about online education.
