Reading Horizons is CRAZY about its improved teaching reading curriculum and manuals! To help others see the benefits and improvements of the new manuals this week’s blog posts will take an in-depth look at the changes and features of the new Reading Horizons v5 curriculum manuals and instructor materials.

Comprehensive Manual Overview
In connection to the release of the new Reading Horizons v5 software, the old “Teacher’s Manual” has been improved extensively to realign the material with the updates made to the new software. The new teacher’s manual is now called: Decoding Strategies for Literacy Development Comprehensive Manual and provides teachers with the lesson plans to properly instruct students effective strategies for building a solid reading foundation.

The key features of the new Decoding Strategies for Literacy Development Comprehensive Manual include:
• 68 lesson plans of word decoding and pronunciation instruction
• 13 most common word list lessons
• Enrichment activities
• ESOL Supplement for English Language Learner instruction
5 Key Updates (5 Additional Updates will be provided on Condensed Manual post)
1. The lesson content was rewritten to be more concise without sacrificing the quality and thoroughness of each lesson.
2. The organization of each lesson was improved by:
- Adding a Skills Overview section at the beginning of each lesson
- Providing a list of teaching materials needed for that lesson
- Inserting review sections within each lesson
- Dividing each lesson into 3 separate sections:
I. Teacher Information
II. Teacher Instruction
III. Student Involvement
3. ESOL Notes are now included throughout the manual to assist ESOL teachers.
4. FYI Notes have been added to provide teachers with additional information on properly teaching the concepts in the lesson content.
5. Enrichment Activities are now included at the end of each lesson to reinforce the concepts taught in that lesson. (This feature is only part of the Comprehensive Manual).
