Over bowls of Fruity Pebbles, Shredded Wheat, and Honey Bunches of Oats, the marketing group hosted a Post Cereal Morning activity to see if we could extract some post-worthy content from the Reading Horizons team.
It’s interesting to note that many of our employees either suffer from dyslexia or ADD or they have family members that are struggling readers, and that includes my own father.
Company President, Tyson Smith wrote down this inspiring story at the breakfast:
“A favorite experience with the results of our program took place about eight years ago when a reading specialist from a local school sought us out for training. She was disappointed with the support the district was providing and knew that she needed more specialized reading strategies for her students.
She was trained in the Discover Intensive Phonics reading program in February and began tutoring her students in this method. I didn’t hear any more from her until three months later, in May, I received a voicemail from a parent. It was the mom of a fifth grade student who had been stuck at a second grade reading level at this same school for three years – despite long hours spent reading every day.
The mother had been so frustrated she didn’t know what to do. Then the reading specialist began tutoring her son with Discover Intensive Phonics and in three months he closed the gap and won the schools Most Improved Reader award! This is the power of one!"
