Here’s an engaging idea to promote reading courtesy of the Public Libraries of Singapore. The library has produced a Reading Profiling DIY Toolkit for children 7-9 years old and another one for 10-12 year old students.
The downloadable, printable brochure asks students certain questions and then, based on their answers, determines what type of reader they are: Thrill Seeker, Brave Heart, Horror Fan, Jolly Joker, or Investigator.
Nearly all of the questions are relevant for U.S. kids and all of the recommended books are available as well. Here’s a sample of some of the fun and thought-provoking questions:
I WOULD LIKE TO KEEP A PET
A Lion
B Kangaroo
C Scorpion
D Clown Fish
E Sea Money
WHEN I GROW UP, I WANT TO BECOME A
A Deep Sea Diver
B Vet
C Paranormal Investigator
D Radio DJ
E Astronaut
WHAT PHRASE BEST DESCRIBES YOU?
A Just Do It!
B Friends Forever!
C RUN while you can!
D Gotcha!
E I’ve got it!
I’ve included an attachment to the Reader Profiling DIY Toolkit for 10-12 year olds on this post. To access the younger version, click here for a link to the library’s website.
As you prepare your students to keep up their reading over the summer months, this reader profile is an interesting way to keep motivation levels high.
For those children who exhibit reluctance and embarrassment when it comes to reading, you can point them in the right direction this summer by encouraging their parents to find a solid multisensory reading software system that delivers results in as little as 60 hours of online/software instruction.
Personally, I can’t wait for summer reading to begin and, by the way, I’m a Thrill Seeker.
Share you’re great ideas for producing happy readers with us!
