The Essential Components of an RTI Implementation

This informative RTI webinar will focus on the five phases of an RTI implementation and the non-negotiable components of RTI. Many school districts begin RTI as an add-on responsibility due to a mandate or best practice document from the state and never address the phases of implementation. Typically those districts are doomed to failure by ignoring that RTI is a paradigm shift in how we educate children, not simply an add-on responsibility or an eligibility determination for special education.

Dr. John E. McCook serves on the advisory board for the Special Educator and for Carnegie Learning Middle School Math. He has written several publications regarding legal issues in special education and Section 504. LRP has published his manuals regarding the pre-referral process and his book, The RTI Guide: Developing and Implementing a Model in Your Schools, which he believes will merge general and special education into a seamless entity. Dr. McCook's second book on RTI, entitled Leading the RTI Process, was published in 2009 by LRP Publications. He is president of McCook and Associates, an educational consulting firm.

Teach the Students - Not Just the Curriculum

Many bright, gifted students experience failure when the curriculum is emphasized more than the students are. The curriculum is a teaching tool in the hands of a professional teacher. It should not be the director of the classroom. No author can anticipate the needs of your classroom. This seminar explains how to address multiple learning difficulties using specific teaching techniques and curriculum modifications. It is applicable to all teachers in any school setting including home school.

Elderine Wyrick received her BS degree in Education from Faith Evangelical Christian College and her Master’s degree (MLitt) from Oxford Graduate School in Family Life Education. She is currently completing a social research doctoral degree in Sociological Integration of Religion & Society.

Developing Fluent Readers

Reading fluency is receiving increased visibility in classrooms around the world, yet many programs fail to understand how to fully integrate this essential reading skill into a reading curriculum. Likewise, programs face challenges in knowing how to explicitly develop this important skill. Teachers and Program Administrators struggle with knowing how to balance both silent and oral reading fluency instruction. Most fluency assessments focus on oral fluency. Dr. Neil J, Anderson maintains that if you want to develop strong, fluent oral readers you must first develop strong, fluent silent readers.

Anderson defines reading fluency as reading at an appropriate rate with adequate comprehension. This webinar will focus on how this definition can be implemented in classrooms. He will review the pedagogical rationale for building reading fluency and suggest activities that teachers, especially those working with second language readers, can use for explicit classroom instruction on how to build and improve reading fluency.
