South Salt Lake City, UT – May 29, 2009 – Reading Horizons is making a generous donation of both its Reading Horizons and Discover Intensive Phonics software to the 21st Century Community Learning Center at Hser Ner Moo, based in South Salt Lake City.
The literacy-building software will be used by patrons who log on to the six computers at the center. In addition, Reading Horizons is providing free teacher’s kits, and HEC staff members will train Hser Ner Moo Center staff and volunteers so that the programs are implemented correctly.
The 21st Century Community Learning Center at Hser Ner Moo is a renovated apartment in the South Parc Townhomes complex in South Salt Lake. It was named for seven-year-old Hser Ner Moo, who was tragically murdered in April 2008. She lived with her family, who are refugees from Myanmar, in the complex. The center was founded in 2008 through federal grants and volunteer hours spent renovating the building. It is administered by the Utah State Office of Education.
English, financial-planning, and social skills classes are taught at the center, which was designed to benefit the community and the residents of South Parc, most of whom are refugees from other countries.
