![]() Upcoming Site - Literacy Volunteers of Coconino CountyLiteracy Volunteers of Coconino County (LVCC) is a privately-funded, community-based, nonprofit organization that works with adults, 16 years and older, who have low literacy skills. LVCC has been an important resource to Flagstaff, Arizona and environs since 1992. LVCC has been an accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy America since 2002. The cornerstone of their work has always been the one-to-one tutoring program conducted by trained volunteers. Currently over 100 pairs of tutors and learners are actively matched and our waiting list has more than 50 names on it. In recent years, to accommodate the demand for our free services, they have added a series of community classes in English conversation, computer literacy, citizenship, and basic reading and writing. Last year, LVCC served over 266 adults in one-to-one tutoring and community classes. This year they expect to see significant growth, especially among the population of English-speaking teens and young adults because of several factors: better location, better publicity, and the economic downturn which has caused extensive layoffs among unskilled workers.
LVCC will be making a leap for literacy in the coming year with the launching of a new program for teens and young adults. Project L.I.F.T. (Literacy Initiative for Tomorrow) will work with up to 30 teens and young adults with low literacy skills each semester in a 3 semester-per-year, intensive literacy program. These participants will be native English-speakers, not English language learners. Most will have reading disabilities, often undiagnosed. The students will come from referrals through the public high schools, the parole system, private organizations and through public outreach. We are asked to take students in the foster care system or those on probation frequently. Currently, LVCC receives dozens of phone calls from concerned parents about their teens’ reading failure.
Read what LVCC has to say about Reading Horizons:
"What we lack is some key software and Reading Horizons is at the top of the list. We have
long hoped to purchase Reading Horizons' Intensive Phonics software for students who
struggle with decoding. We believe Reading Horizons is the best software available for the
individual who is not able to easily decode our alphabet. We also believe acquiring
phonics skills in adolescence requires a great deal of practice and repetition, but that
can be de-motivating. Reading Horizons uses a lively, multi-sensory, interactive format
which provides intrinsic motivation for this population who so crucially needs to learn to
read in order to become successful adults."
