When the vowel says its sound, we will call it a Short Vowel and put the word Short above these vowels.
When the vowel says its name, we will call it a Long Vowel and put the word Long above these vowels.
We have a problem here. These vowels look just alike. We need a marking to show which is long and which is short. Erase all but the bottom of the letter S. The little mark that is left identifies it as a short vowel. Put that mark over each vowel to show the vowel says its sound.
Now do the same thing to the long vowels. Erase all but the bottom of the L. That mark shows us the vowel says its name.
You can make this a fun impactful activity that students will always remember and it will help them remember the difference between long and short vowels and their markings.
After this lesson you will no longer use the slide. From now on short vowels will be represented with their mark. Long vowels will be marked with the long vowel mark.
