A Teacher’s Work
The roots of Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself are grounded in an intensive, explicit, systematic phonics program crafted in the early 1970s by educational professional Charlotte Lockhart. Ms. Lockhart, a former elementary instructor and principal, created the original Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself curriculum in response to students' poor reading performance in her school's reading programs. She tutored students in her office daily using high-kinesthetic/verbal techniques, and they learned quickly how sound and letter relationships create words. Young students learned to read and to spell, and lives were changed.
A Company’s Vision
HEC Reading Horizons has distributed Charlotte Lockhart’s instructional manuals for over 21 years, during which time it became an early innovator of elementary and adult reading software to provide individualized instruction and accompanying hands-on practice with Charlotte Lockhart's product. Few software companies have been developing software as long as HEC Reading Horizons has!
In January 2001, HEC Reading Horizons purchased the copyright from the Lockhart family, uniting all materials used to teach Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself under one publishing umbrella and enabling us to bring greater harmony and efficacy to the program's components.
Our Commitment to Quality
As new products and enhancements are released, the efficacy of upgraded materials continues to help teachers present the principles of Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself more clearly and concisely. Upgrades and enhancements, based on feedback of experienced field users, are applied every few years.
