Research on Teaching-Reading Strategies

Research Supports Explicit, Systematic, and Intensive Phonics Instruction as a Strategy for Both Children and Adults in Learning to Read.

Findings from the National Reading Panel, in accordance with the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), show overwhelming evidence that explicit, systematic phonics is necessary for reading success. Systematic phonics instruction teaches a planned sequence of phonics elements rather than highlighting elements as they happen to appear in a text.

Research findings from the Institute of Education Reform and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development have shown the importance of:

  • Explicit, intensive work in sound/symbol associations.
  • Helping students understand the sound structure of the language on a phonemic level.
