Reading Horizons Benefits
Reading Horizons is a remediation program that incorporates teacher training, direct instruction, and computer courseware.
Reading Horizons courseware was developed specifically for students aged 10 and above who exhibit below average reading skills – particularly those reading below a sixth grade level.
Reading Horizons emphasizes word attack or decoding skills.
Excellent teacher in-service provides hands on experience for educators in both direct instruction and computer courseware.
Non-consumable Teacher’s Kits are available and are very cost effective.
The Reading Horizons software can be the primary vehicle for learning when, augmented with direct instruction to internalize skills. The software:
- Builds self-confidence and self-esteem in students that have never been successful readers.
- Has been proven effective for over 15 years.
- Can be completed in three to six months.
- Can bring reading gains of two to five grade levels for most students.
- Is easy and fun to learn and instruct.
- Has no hidden costs and can be used for many years. The direct instruction materials come with the software and contain no consumables. Professional development is only $750 per day for a staff of 25 (one day of training for Reading Horizons users).
- Takes 40 to 60 hours for students to complete. The time differential depends on time spent in the Mastery, Drill, and Practice. Each student should run the software until mastery is achieved (30 lessons / Mastery, Drill, and Practice).
- Includes six unique assessments, four of which are automatically administered.
- Includes an easy-to-use management system that allows the teacher to monitor student progress at all times.
- Contains instruction that has been designed with needs of low-functioning students in mind. Nothing is assumed, and, in fact, non-readers can be successful with the software. More-advanced students will bypass rudimentary lessons.
