Reading Horizons

Interactive Software for English as a Foreign Language (EFL)

Students learning English as an additional language benefit greatly from explicit phonics instruction because it breaks English down into small, manageable parts. Reading Horizons and Discover Intensive Phonics teach students of all ages the logic behind the language, thereby shortening the time it takes for students to become fluent readers and speakers of English. EFL-specific features in the software make it the perfect tool for EFL students on all levels, including those who understand very little or no English.

EFL-Specific Software Features

Alpha Say (Ages 4–9)

  • Students can watch videos showing proper mouth movements for pronouncing each sound of the English language.

Optional Foreign Language Translations (Ages 10 and Up)

  • For additional cost, this instructor-activated feature gives students the option to hear directions in Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, and Haitian-Creole, making the software accessible to EFL students who understand little or no English.

English for Special Purposes Databases (Ages 10 and up)

  • This instructor-activated option helps EFL students reinforce phonetic skills and vocabulary development using words in specific categories. These include Travel, Hospitality, Business, Medicine, and School. Words are displayed in English and an optional foreign language.
