The most effective methods to use while teaching reading has been a subject of debate for years. The majority of the population, around 70%, are automatic readers and will tend to learn to read regardless of the type or manner of reading instruction. Because of this, the importance of explicit reading instruction was not recognized until the focus shifted to the 30% who were not progressing. Studies conducted in the last decade have shown both the benefits and the necessity of explicit phonics instruction when teaching reading.
