Employee of the Month
Kathryn is our December Employee of the Month. Kathryn is one of our long-timers around here and is a very consistent and patient person. Her favorite thing to do when she goes home is to give her husband, Ralph, a hug. You may also find her hanging out watching her favorite movie — Lincoln, or reading her favorite books The Good Earth by Pearl Buck or A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, or listening to some of her favorite musicians — Simon and Garfunkel. Kathryn loves Thanksgiving! Some day Kathryn would like to accomplish the task to “understand how other people think.” If she could be anyone in the world for a day she said: One of my daughters in-law. She is just fun. If she could live anywhere in the world, here is what she said: A cabin in the woods or by the ocean - Just to be outside. The person Kathryn most admires is Ann Allen because “she always saw the bright side of a difficult situation.” And until Nate started working at Reading Horizons, she never had a nickname: Kat Bom Diggity.
Craig is the November Reading Horizons Employee of the Month. Craig has been with us for nearly 4 years. His favorite thing to do when he gets home is to "Either go to the gym and/or cook dinner. I love to cook and share the household duties." He could be seen watching his favorite movie, Inception because he "love watching it "newly" many times over" or listening to his favorite type of music: "Jazz vocal and instrumental - or Browse the Spotify moods selections." His favorite book is "The Princess Bride by William Goldman - the first book that I had read cover to cover, for 9th grade English class." Craig's favorite time of year is coming up - Thanksgiving and Christmas. Craig would love to learn how to sail a boat as some point in his life. Which is fitting because if he could live anywhere in the world he "would be a Pirate on the High Seas - Red Beard." His first car was a Copper Metallic 1980 Toyota Celica. As for nicknames he was willing to share, here is what he said: My Dad called me Scout. My buddies and teachers in Jr. High and HS called me Red Bair. We love having Craig around.
Julie is the Reading Horizons Employee of the Month for October 2015. She has worked with Reading Horizons for just over two years. Drawing with pastels is her favorite thing to do when she finishes working each night. Her favorite Book is "Henry of Atlantic City" by Frederick Reuss and here is what she says about her favorite movie: "That's a tough question. I like different kinds of movies, but I tend to watch a lot of foreign movies. In that category, probably the Brazilian movie Central Station." Christmas is her favorite holiday and she has a wide diversity of music tastes: "celtic rock and fusion, Brazilian musical styles, classical (especially Chopin and Mozart), hard rock, alternative (Radiohead). Not a big fan of opera or country..." Julie admires her mom the most and if Julie could be one person for a day she would be: "My mom, so I could truly understand how she dealt with a series of hardships." One thing she would like to accomplish is life is "learning true forgiveness." Her first car was a maroon 1978 Chevy Camaro. If Julie could live anywhere in the world, here is what she said: "Probably in the mountains of the Washington Cascades, for the beauty, serenity, sport, nature, and wildlife. I would still want to live in the US because I think it's the best." And finally, Julie won't give up her nickname that her family had for her because it's a family secret! That just makes me want to know it more... We appreciate all that Julie does across the company.
Tena is our Employee of the Month for September. His first make and model car was “Mitsubishi Tredia Turbo. Ruby Red. Stick shift. And possibly an Autobot. It gave the “most ballingest car ever” a run for it’s money.” His favorite thing to do when he goes home as night is “See my wife and kids... and play video games or flight simulators.” When asked about his favorite movie he says: “A tie between pretty much all the Pixar movies (especially Inside Out and Toy Story), most Christopher Nolan movies, The Giver and maybe Primer. It will hurt your head. As for his favorite book, he says: Either The Giver by Lois Lowry or To The Limit: An Air Cav Huey Pilot in Vietnam by Tom Johnson.” The music he prefers is “Dance, electronic, 80’s, classical, Tahitian/Hawaiian.” His favorite holiday is “Pie Day (March 14th) or Any Friday the 13th. I was #13 in hockey and we usually try to do something fun on Friday the 13th.” If he could accomplish anything in his life it would be: “Go to space or fly an Apache helicopter or fighter jet (supposedly you can in Russia with enough money).” If he could be someone else for a day he would be “An astronaut in space, an Apache helicopter pilot, or a fighter jet pilot. Or Superman.” If he could live anywhere he said: Japan because I love the food and the complexity and intricacies of their big cities, and also because much of Japan is a fusion of futuristicness mixed with the past. And so many cool things to do. He didn’t really have a nickname, but he did say “some peeps used to call me T in hockey because they couldn’t figure out how to say my name. It’s Tay-nuh, like the name Dana but with a T folks.” The person he most admires is “Superman because he chooses not to destroy us. Could you imagine if Superman were a villain instead? It’d be BRU-TAL.”
Jen has been with Reading Horizons for just over six years and she makes a huge difference in our company. After work, her favorite thing to do is “eat dinner and hang out with [her] husband”. Maybe while she’s hanging out with her husband, she might watch her favorite kind of movies: “silly movies I can quote with my siblings”. Her favorite book is David Copperfield by Charles Dickens and her favorite time of the year is Thanksgiving. One thing she would like to accomplish in life is “mostly just to be happy”. Here is what she said when who she would be for a day if she could: “I can’t think of anyone specific but it would be cool to be someone totally different than myself to see things from a totally different perspective”. Jen doesn’t like the snow, so she would choose to live somewhere with short winters and a short drive to the beach. First car: red Geo Metro. She likes most kinds of music. Nickname: “My dad called me Jennifurball or furb (I had a lot of hair) and my grandpa called me pixie because I was so small.” Finally, when asked who she admires the most, she said: my parents.
Stacy has been with the company for just over 5 years, and the company is so grateful that she is here. Stacy works from home most days of the week, so her most favorite thing to do when she ‘gets home’ from work is to leave home. Stacy is indecisive about her favorite book, or should I say books. She says: “This is an impossible question for me to answer but I will try; Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch, and The Adventures of a Happy Man by Channing Pollock.” Stacy maybe a connoisseur of movies.., she can’t choose just one as being her favorite because it depends on the genre. She loves the spring time and Easter, and one things she’d like to accomplish in her life is to own a cabin (I hope she invites us up to visit!). She listens to mostly Alterative music. Stacy’s first car was a sort of beige GMC Jimmy. Stacy would love to live somewhere near the mountains AND the beach because then she wouldn’t have to decide which to visit on her ‘days off’. Stacy is comfortable being who she is, so she wouldn’t want to be someone else for a day, as we all like her for who she is as well. Here is what Stacy said about the nicknames she had growing up: “Patience (because I allegedly had none). My friends in high school called me Stack (the pronunciation for Stacy without the y because apparently adding an e to Stac was a little too much for people from Payson :) )” About whom she admires the most, Stay says: “There is not one living person (that I know of) who possesses all of the qualities that I admire. I admire a lot of different people for different reasons.”
Charlotte has been around for almost 2 years. She reads, a lot. In fact, that’s her favorite things to do when she goes home at night. If you were to ask her what her favorite book is, she would say “All of them”. But of ‘all’ of the books, Little Women and The Outsiders would be her most favorite. Her favorite movie is You’ve Got Mail. Winter is her favorite season. Beyond everything she’s already done or in the process of doing, one more thing she would like to accomplish in her life is to write a book. Ireland would be the place she would choose to live because “it is the home of my heart. The culture just speaks to me.” Charlotte probably listened to her favorite music (80’s pop & rock.... a little Celtic rock when feeling like cranking the radio) in her first car (a 1980 Red Oldsmobile Delta 88). Nicknames by siblings/friends: Char, Charlie, Charmin (as in the tp brand). The person Charlotte admires the most is her mother.
Nate has been working for Reading Horizons for only 9 months, but has already made a huge impact in the sales arena. After a hard day of work, Nate enjoys practicing his drums. (I wonder if he’s really any good... :) Maybe we should have him play for us sometime.) You may also catch him watching The Dark Knight, his favorite movie. Or maybe reading one of his favorite books - Harry Potter related. Nate’s favorite time of year is summer, which would be a great time to work on the one thing he’d like to accomplish in his life - “Learn to fight like Jason Bourne”. The person he’d most like to be like is Mike Johnston. The first car Nate ever owned was a 1996 Nissan 300 ZX. As a kid, you may have heard Nate referred to as Scooter, and I’m sure there is a pretty good story behind that one. The person that Nate admires most is his mom.
Warren has been working on the software development team at Reading Horizons for almost 5 years. If he’s not remodeling his house, you might just find him watching his favorite movie, Napoleon Dynamite, or lstening to music such as Depeche Mode or Muse. He’s a dreamer... someday he would love to live somewhere isolated but still having speedy internet service. And he’d like it to be fall time all year round because he loves the cool but not cold. Who doesn’t love their first car? Warren’s first car was a red Geo Metro. Dependable car, just like Warren is dependable. He likes the guys on the development team. Warren wants to be Chris for a day because, and I quote “[Chris] said so.” Additionally, the person Warren admires most is Aaron. Why, do you ask? Because “he’s smurt.”
Zach Allred has been with Reading Horizons for less than a year, but has already made a huge impact in our video world. He works as our video specialist and came to us through a referral from Dan. Zach admires his parents more than anyone else, enjoys listening to Indi Rock music, his favorite holiday is Christmas, and his favorite book is “Lost Boys” by Orson Scott Card. When he goes home at night, his favorite pastime is surfing the web or watching Netflix, probably turning on the movie “Short Term 12,” his favorite movie. Bill Murray is such a cool guy that Zach would love to be Bill for a day. Maybe he’ll take a turn at directing a feature film some day - now that would be pretty awesome! Maybe even up in Portland or Seattle where Zach would want to live someday. Back in the day, Zach owned a red Ford Escort and for some reason his nickname is Donald (maybe we should ask him why...). Last but not least, Zach will be getting married on April 18th. We love having Zach around and hope he’s here for a while.
Aaron Hess is one of our long time staff members. We think we know him, but here are some things you may not have known about him. He doesn’t like mowing the lawn so fall is his favorite season when the grass doesn’t grow anymore. His favorite book is “One Hundred Years of Solitude” by Gabriel García Márquez. Favorite movies include: Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back, While You Were Sleeping, The Princess Bride, and The Goonies. Star Wars makes total sense — he has a Han Solo bobble head on his desk! (By the way, if Aaron could be anyone for a day, he would choose to be Han Solo.) When Aaron gets home at night, he tucks his kids in bed for some peace and quiet (his favorite thing to do at night), then he may just sit down and listen to just about any kind of music, Jazz first, but he may also listen to some Country. Aaron has a travel bug — he’d like to visit China/the Orient, Central America (Mayan Temples), and (Australia/ New Zealand. If he could live anywhere, he’d choose the Pacific Islands so he could Hang Loose. The person he admires most is George Washington. His siblings and friends used to call him Uncle Aaron (because he’s got a nephew who is older). And his first car was a white 1973 Chevy Malibu.
Mike Sonnenberg is the Employee of the Month for January. Mike has worked at Reading Horizons for eight months. Did you know Mike’s first car was a dark green Ford Escort Hatchback? Did you also know that one of his nicknames is Bergers? If Mike is not watching his favorite movie, Field of Dreams, after work, you would find him watching SportsCenter. Someday Mike would love working for himself again. He loves listening to country music and his favorite book is “The Cuckoo’s Egg” by Cliff Stoll. The simple life would be achieved if he could be one of his 3 year old nieces because it “would be fun to be a kid again and not have a care in the world.” He most admires his parents and grandparents and his favorite holiday is Christmas. He and Heidi Hyte, another Reading Horizons employee, were married on February 21st, 2015.
