Simple & Practical K-3 Implementation
Learn how Reading Horizons boosts reading success:
Teachers: The Most Important Part of Any Reading Program
Reading Horizons is more than just a program—it’s a new way of looking at research-based reading instruction. The software and direct instruction materials make it simple for teachers to implement, but those tools are only effective because they are based on a proven method. A method that simplifies the complexity of the English language while incorporating research-based instructional techniques into a series of explicit and practical strategies for the classroom.
Because Reading Horizons gives teachers a new perspective on reading instruction, professional development is an important first step for any school that wants to implement the program. We believe that teachers are the most important piece of any program, and without the proper training it is difficult to fulfill this key role.
Every teacher needs the proper training to provide research-based reading instruction to their students. However, not every school or district has the same budget or schedule. To meet the different needs of each institution, Reading Horizons offers a variety of training options:
Assess. Instruct. Adapt.
Upon completing a professional development training course, teachers are ready to lead implementation—assisted by the direct instruction materials and interactive software. By applying the following model, teachers can adapt to the unique needs of each classroom:
Assess student abilities
The assessment system included in the software provides a baseline level for each student and efficiently monitors progress throughout the course. Assessment data is recorded for each student in the teacher administration system.
Instruct research-based principles
The scope of Reading Horizons instruction includes strategies that fill gaps in foundational reading skills and activities that build pronunciation, spelling, vocabulary, reading fluency and comprehension. Instruction can be delivered by a teacher, the software, or ideally, a combination of the two.
Adapt to student need
Assessment data allows the software to automatically create a targeted, differentiated experience for each student while providing teachers with the information they need to target specific student needs with small group and one-on-one direct instruction.
The best results are achieved when students spend 30-60 minutes a day, 3-5 days a week either with software or teacher-led instruction. The pacing of the program should be based on student proficiency.
