My kindergarten students--I am amazed! Granted, we have to go slower than their classmates and have just finished letter group 1. However, these 3 students, including one ELL (early language learner), have just figured out how to slide the sounds to make words. I wish everyone could see how they move along with the slide when we write at the board and then add the final consonant to make a word. We will go through the word slowly a few times. They stop and think (I can see the wheels spinning in their little heads). All of a sudden, they get these huge grins and shout, "dad!" or whatever word we made. They love making the nonsense "words." One of my third grade students, who is reading well below grade level, is finally learning to cover up the word ending and slide through the beginning sound and the rest of the letters to "sound out" a word.
