Foundational Reading Instruction for Grades K-3
Empower elementary teachers with a detailed guide and materials for implementing the science of reading and spelling instruction in the classroom with the Reading Horizons Discovery® direct instruction materials.
The Reading Horizons Discovery® direct instruction materials prepare teachers to do the following:
Align Instruction with Reading Science & Structured Literacy
Teachers can provide every student with reading instruction that is aligned with reading science, Structured Literacy, and the Orton-Gillingham approach using the Reading Horizons Discovery® curriculum. Because it is aligned to research, the program helps every student build a solid foundation in reading and prevents general education students from falling behind—including students with dyslexia.
Differentiate Whole Class Instruction
Each lesson in the Reading Horizons Discovery® Teacher's Manuals includes a differentiation table that outlines the best reinforcement activities for that skill for students below, on, and above level. This expedites lesson planning and simplifies the task of providing differentiated instruction to a whole class of students with varying needs.
Provide Multisensory Practice & Instruction
The teacher's manuals outline how to make every lesson an active, multisensory experience for students. Each lesson includes high student involvement, encourages students to come up to the board, and gets every student responding during teacher instruction. This deepens learning and helps students make new connections that facilitate understanding.
Reinforce Instruction with Decodable Text
Students can directly apply the decoding skills they learn during instruction into reading practice with a collection of decodable texts. These books use controlled language that emphasizes each decoding skill and the sight words students have previously learned—giving them both practice and confidence in reading.
Connect Phonics and Spelling Instruction
Research has found that when reading (i.e., decoding) instruction is integrated with spelling (i.e., encoding) instruction, students see significant gains in both reading and spelling related tasks (Weiser & Mathes, 2011). Reading Horizons provides the training and materials to put this integration into practice.
Build Teacher Confidence
In connection with training, the teacher's manuals give teachers a roadmap as they convert their instruction to match research-based best practices. They don't have to guess how this should look in the classroom; they have every instruction they need to confidently put these strategies into action.
Basic Phonics Instruction
Make it easy for teachers to prepare research-based lessons for teaching alphabet sounds, Blends, basic sight words, and basic word formation with the Reading Horizons Discovery® kindergarten direct instruction materials. The teacher's manuals provide a detailed guide for lesson planning, and additional materials help students master the skills they have been taught.

Explicit Phonics Instruction
Provide teachers with detailed manuals for teaching research-based explicit, systematic, and sequential phonics-based instruction to students in grades 1-3 with the Reading Horizons Discovery® direct instruction materials. Scripted lesson manuals help teachers know how to model and adjust to this research-based approach to reading instruction. Additional materials are included to increase student engagement and facilitate student transfer of decoding skills into fluent reading.
Moving Spelling Instruction Beyond Memorization
Take spelling instruction beyond a memorized list. The Reading Horizons Discovery® Spelling Supplement provides teachers with an explicit guide for teaching students in grades 1-3 how to encode and prove words are spelled correctly. The Reading Horizons Discovery® Spelling Supplement is perfectly correlated to the Reading Horizons Discovery® reading program (purchased separately).

Turn Decoding Skills into Fluent Reading
Students turn decoding skills into fluent reading with decodable stories that reinforce the skills they learn during phonics instruction with the Reading Horizons Discovery® Little Books. These books include seventy-four (twenty for kindergarten, fifty-four for grades 1-3) full-color stories written with controlled vocabulary and decodable text that correspond to each specific skill taught during phonics instruction.
Building Student Engagement and Skill Retention
In addition to the materials referenced above, the Reading Horizons Discovery® Teacher's Kits include additional resources that increase student engagement and boost skill retention:

Reference Posters
Extend student memory with classroom reference posters (four for kindergarten, seven for grades 1-3). Students can refer to these posters when they need a quick reminder of the skills they’ve already been taught.

Transfer Cards
After learning each skill, students can take the first step toward transferring the skill to fluent reading with 756 Transfer Cards that help them practice skills in isolation and in the context of a sentence.

Games Supplement
Provide teachers with a variety of games for increasing student engagement and differentiating instruction to different skill levels as they teach the skills of the Reading Horizons method.

Data-Driven Phonics Instruction
To make teacher-led instruction more data-driven, Reading Horizons provides two resources for tracking student progress: the Reading Horizons Discovery® Software and the Reading Horizons Accelerate® website. The software provides additional instruction, assessment, and data. The website is free for customers and can plug software data into a robust lesson planning tool. The website also includes how-to videos, additional teaching resources, and a helpful community forum.
