What is the Reading Horizons Approach to Reading Intervention?

Learn how our approach helps intervention students improve their reading skills:

Simple, Streamlined Reading Instruction

Reading Horizons empowers teachers and students with a simple, streamlined approach to reading intervention. By teaching the following concepts, students are provided with a framework that allows them to read the majority of words in the English language:

  • 42 Sounds of the Alphabet
  • 5 Phonetic Skills
  • 2 Decoding Skills

Students learn these skills through an explicit, systematic, and multi-sensory approach based on Orton-Gillingham principles of instruction.

Why Does it Work for Intervention Students?

Because the core of Reading Horizons framework only requires students to remember seven rules that can be applied to the majority of words in the English language, it is easy for students to remember. This, paired with the multi-sensory nature of the program, is the reason students with learning disabilities and special needs, as well as ESL students, can grasp the program more readily than alternative interventions.

The number of decoding rules is significantly lower than even the closest competitive product - making it the most accessible to at-risk students.

Students master these skills through a blend of software and direct instruction. The software allows students to receive independent, data-driven, differentiated reading instruction that continuously adapts to each student’s individual needs. The direct instruction materials make it easy for teachers to implement high-engagement multi-sensory reading instruction into the classroom.

Decoding Skills: A Means To An End

Reading Horizons focus on decoding is not an end in itself. Rather, decoding skills create a foundation so your students will easily master more advanced reading skills. While learning this framework, exercises are layered in to build vocabulary, spelling, grammar, fluency, and comprehension skills.

How Effective is our Approach?

Upon completing the Reading Horizons program, most intervention students gain 2-3 reading levels. These students are able to experience success for the first time, and their future is expanded.

When implementing Reading Horizons Discovery with direct instruction, software, and professional development, Reading Horizons guarantees the results. Please contact your rep for more detail.
