GET TO THE CORE
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) have set the bar for increased student achievement, college and career preparation, and global competitiveness. The challenge now: aligning your school with the standards.

How Can Reading Horizons Help?
Reading Horizons fulfills 92% of the standards for foundational reading skills for students in grades K-3, as outlined by the CCSS. In addition, Reading Horizons helps older students who struggle with reading catch up to the standards for their grade level. The program also meets the five key publishers’ criteria set forth by the authors of the CCSS for aligning curriculum to the standards for foundational reading skills.
By spending 20 to 30 minutes a day with Reading Horizons, students can develop strong foundational reading skills that help them meet the requirements of the CCSS. Students also gain a solid base for building college- and career-level reading skills.
Correlation to Publishers' Criteria for Aligning to CCSS
Each Reading Horizons lesson contains a variety of resources to meet the needs of students who are on, above, or below mastery for the skill taught in the lesson. These resources can be used with individual students, small groups, or with the whole class.
Reading Horizons software programs assess students after each lesson, chapter, and exercise. Based on performance, the software customizes instruction to meet the needs of each student.
Reading Horizons instruction for each new skill, whether introduced with direct instruction or software, is explicit, clear, and concise and is followed by guided practice. During guided practice, students apply new skills, review previously-learned skills, and receive necessary feedback. Through this type of guided practice, students are taught skills that build phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, spelling, syntax, vocabulary, and reading fluency.
Reading Horizons helps students transfer foundational reading skills to fluent reading through a variety of activities. These exercises help students increase sound recognition, increase high-frequency word recognition, and build reading comprehension.
Throughout the Reading Horizons program, students hear, say, write, and read every new word that is introduced. Students also learn the meanings of affixes and root words, helping them analyze the meaning of unfamiliar words. This process helps students build vocabulary and learn the meanings of the words they encounter across disciplines.
A myriad of formal and informal assessment opportunities are included in Reading Horizons to measure student progress. Guided practice, skill checks, and chapter assessments are used to test students on lesson material. For each comprehension exercise, reading rate is recorded and comprehension is measured. The Common Core Report helps teachers quickly view student mastery on the Common Core criteria covered in the Reading Horizons Discovery software. Several assessments are used to place students in the program and diagnose areas of weakness: Phonemic Awareness, Most Common Words, and Spelling and Word Recognition.
