Powerful Tools to Supplement the Reading Workshop
Reading Horizons Software and Direct Instruction Materials
By participating in the Reading Horizons Online Reading Workshop, you will increase your knowledge of effective reading instruction. To make these strategies easy to implement in the classroom, we’d like to introduce you to some powerful tools to supplement the Reading Workshop.
All of our tools are based on the Reading Horizons framework of the 42 Sounds of English, the Five Phonetic Skills, and the Two Decoding Skills, so you can be confident that they will assist you in teaching the Reading Horizons method with fidelity.
The Right Program
Reading Horizons has two product lines to help you easily and successfully implement instruction in a way that is age appropriate for your students. Reading Horizons Discovery™ helps emerging readers kindergarten through 3rd grade develop the foundational skills they need to become successful readers and stay on track for academic success. Reading Horizons Elevate™ helps students 4th grade and older move beyond past struggles with reading and master basic skills and strategies that are essential first steps in preparing for college and career-level reading.
The Right Mode of Instruction
When it comes to the right mode of reading instruction, one size does not fit all. In some settings, computer-based learning is the best fit. In others, teacher-led direct instruction (either one on one or in a whole class setting) is the obvious choice. In still others, a blended approach combining the best of teacher-led and computer-based modes is the answer. Whichever mode is best for you, your students, and your resources, Reading Horizons has effective, flexible tools to help you.
The Right Tools
Now that you’ve decided on the right program and the right mode, you’re ready to select the right tools to supplement the Workshop.
Teacher’s Kits
Reading Horizons teacher’s kits include a wide variety of direct instruction materials that actively engage students in learning. Each kit contains a multi-volume, non-consumable, easy-to-follow Teacher’s Manual with scripted lessons, an Enrichment CD, Transfer Cards, wall posters, a Games Supplement, and a tote bag, as well as additional materials specific to the program you choose. Reading Horizons direct instruction materials can be used as the sole mode of instruction, as a supplement to basal/core programs, or in tandem with software.
Interactive Reading Software
Our interactive reading software delivers targeted Reading Horizons instruction to each student and adapts pace and content based on student mastery of skills. The software can be used as the sole mode of instruction, as part of a blended approach to teaching, or for pre-teaching or reviewing lesson material.
There are three software-based instruction options: the network package, the stand-alone package, or the online package. Each contains competency-based interactive lessons, assessments, a vocabulary component, a library component, language-based games, and an Administration System with a wide range of reports and student setup options. Whichever package you choose, you will receive unlimited 800-line phone support, one free upgrade, a User Manual, a Lesson Summary Manual, and free, unlimited access to Reading Horizons Accelerate, a website for customers that includes implementation and training resources.
Teacher’s kits and interactive reading software are available for both Reading Horizons Discovery and Reading Horizons Elevate. To learn more, or to speak with a Reading Horizons specialist, click here.
