I am writing to let you know how much I am enjoying using the Reading Horizons program in my classroom. My classes are composed of men ages 18-60. I have students of all ethnic and educational backgrounds, which makes having a program that really deals with the true basic phonics rules so essential. It also requires that the program be clear in its presentation.
I use the Reading Horizons with my upper-level Hispanic students and all of my emerging-level native English speakers. We have found the program to be a very effective tool in helping develop a reading foundation.
I especially like that it gives the students time to write down the information and enough follow-up practice to learn the rules.
Additionally, it is great because it does cover the vital pieces of phonics in a sequence that makes sense to both the students and to me as a reading teacher. I have seen students who began the program at a 3.3 reading grade level, then read the entire list of words in the post-test. The students complete the program feeling comfortable with words and taking more difficult assignments with some self-confidence, where there was little or none before they began.
I certainly appreciate a program that covers the real fundamental phonic sounds and rules.
Thank you very much!
