I team teach in a 1-2 multi-age classroom with 48 students. I have been using Reading Horizons in our classroom for three years. I was originally introduced to the program while teaching in a parochial school approximately 10 years ago and loved it then.
I believe it gives children the tools and skills that are necessary to decode any word that they may come upon. I love the hands-on approach. Our children use slates at their seats to practice the skills taught. They enjoy Reading Horizons and are always eager and excited for that particular time of day. I also use it when I tutor individual students in phonics.
Reading Horizons has given our children the confidence they need to read and decode words. They have shared with each other the rules they have learned in this program.
(During) our first year of multi-age classroom, we had a child who had been retained in first grade. He lacked several necessary skills for decoding words. We used this program. He quickly picked up the rules for decoding words and made great improvement in reading. He grew more confident and became our success story for using Reading Horizons.
