I had been tutoring one-on-one since 1984 when a Char Lockhart representative came to Minneapolis to teach a class of tutors the Reading Horizons method for Minnesota Literacy in 1990. There were 10 of us who took the eight-hour class one blizzardy Saturday. By the time we were through, I was so excited about it, I could hardly wait for Monday so I could try it on my students.
Reading Horizons worked immediately. When Steven*, age 56, started (with the program), he warned me that he couldn’t remember anything. He was dyslexic and had never learned to read, but was very "learned" from listening to tapes, public radio, etc. We went through the whole Reading Horizons method and he remembered all (of) the skills. In fact, I gave a session at a Minnesota literacy conference, demonstrating Reading Horizons, and Steven assisted me.
I have taught people from nine different foreign countries and (from) the U.S. They are all so grateful, and it makes me feel very happy and fulfilled to help them.
One student of mine is from Tanzania and had never been to school here or there. She was 50 (years old) when we started, and she learned very quickly with this method. She has achieved her citizenship and thanks me for that every time we meet.
Lloyd came from Trinidad and (had) never learned reading there. He was 34 when we started (with Reading Horizons), now he has gone back to his country and (has) started his own car rental business.
I love teaching literacy. It is so fulfilling to see how happy it makes students when they learn and how grateful they are to have all these “light bulbs” turn on with the Reading Horizons method.
