Myself and a fellow teacher Maree, are using the (Reading Horizons) program. This year we have been sharing our knowledge with the other grade 2 teachers and they are following the phonics sequence of teaching as well. All have been accessing the website.
The explicit teaching is great. The kids and I enjoy it. This year Maree and I have been very systematic about it. We have been able to show, discuss and model the 5 phonetic rules to other early childhood teachers. They all like it and had a few ah ha moments as well. The teacher who has my last year’s class is impressed by the reading and spelling ability of the whole class.
I am finding the greatest benefit is seeing it flow over to the kids writing. Firstly it’s a great teaching moment. During conferencing, (either one on one or in small groups), children are able to ‘prove’ and justify why the word is correct or incorrect. If incorrect – they try again and in general, write it correctly. The most common words have become my word wall, and they know how to access those words. It is a great way to link reading with writing.
Maree and I bought the Student workbook – It’s great – really great! (Only thing – Americans need to learn how to spell Mum, colour and favourite!!) This year we have a curriculum coordinator appointed to the school – and I have shared it with her. Spelling (vocabulary), reading and phonics has been identified as a priority. Thank you so much!
