I have been teaching primary school for 18 years – 13 in third grade and this is my sixth year in first grade. Phonics was always just rules and really didn’t mean a great deal to me at the third-grade level.
When I switched to first grade, I wondered how I would teach the children to read and spell in a sequential manner. I discovered Reading Horizons and I am thankful to say I now have a curriculum in which my students read and spell beyond my expectations.
I am indebted to you for your program and I know that no matter where I teach or what reading series is used, I will not change the Reading Horizons program.
The response from parents has also been very positive. I have the parent’s manual and use this as an aid so parents can know what is going on and how to help their child. When our school has parent visitation day, the phonics period is the time when I have the most visitors.
My students enjoy working at the chalkboard daily and are happy they are “so smart.” I also use the computer program as reinforcement for my students.
After using the Reading Horizons program for six years, I highly recommend this program as a very effective teaching tool, to be used to teach children the fundamentals of reading and spelling. Thank you!
