I have a 2nd grade student who is reading at the kindergarten level. His disability is in auditory processing and he really struggles to hear the difference between short vowel sounds. In the past he would look at the first letter and guess a word. We started the year reviewing beginning consonants and then I taught slides. We are now adding ending consonants to cvc words. However, I noticed that when he is trying to decode a word he covers up the ending consonant and sounds out the slide and then adds the ending consonant. This is totally on his own. This is the only way he is successful! It is so rewarding to watch!! We are still moving slowly but I think he is finally gaining skills he will be able to use in the future.
