I just wanted to send along some of the thoughts that my students have had about Reading Horizons and how it has helped them.
I watched some of these students really excel once they finished the 30 lessons. One in particular is now excited about reading and goes to the library twice a week to get new books. Prior to that, he would not even visit the library; it was foreign territory to him. He needed to unlearn many years of “learned helplessness.” His self-esteem is moving up from where it used to be: a flat line.
He is enjoying his newfound freedom. He says, “I just can’t wait to get back to the library. I didn’t know there was so much good stuff to read about!”
Although he is still incarcerated, he is seeing with new eyes. He is dropping the “I-can’t-itis” syndrome and is taking responsibility for his actions. He is well on his way to real freedom, the one that can be found from within.
Thank you, Reading Horizons. Keep up the excellent work. Everyone benefits.
